Pricing
Pricing anything that is handmade, especially made by yourself, is difficult. I've tried to come up with some guidelines so I don't get stuck in the trap of underpricing everything. The price shown on any item is the result of following the ideas below. The lower and higher prices are ±20%. And you can always choose a price of your own that you think is right.
Studio time comes out to £6 an hour. This includes access to the studio and wheels, some glazes, and regular firings.
Clay is around £1.50 and up a kilo. A mug is around 500 grams.
The house glazes are sometimes pretty good, but sometimes don't match the desired outcome. Buying glaze is a great way to spend money. The cost of the glaze has to be factored in. Powdered glaze bought in bulk is cheaper but often less interesting than pre-made painted on glaze.
Making each piece has multiple steps. While it is possible to throw a reasonable pot on the wheel in just a few minutes that's often the shortest part of the process. There is trimming and other refinement, the first (bisque) firing, decorating, the second (glaze) firing. If a pot is hand built with coils, or slabs, or pinching the building process may be much longer. For the most part I account for that as within "studio time" above.
And somewhere in there is a fudge factor of how cool, unique, special, successful a piece is. Some pieces have a vibe of "yeah, I made that, whatev" while others have "yeah, I made that, go me".
